The Vermont House and Senate Committees on Transportation are doing some great work this legislative session. Good thing they are…
They’ve been taking some interesting testimony, and helping to move Vermont closer to solving our transportation needs.
HERE’S WHY their work is so important.
According to the Energy Action Network Annual Progress Report,
“IN 2018, THE MOST RECENT YEAR FOR WHICH WE HAVE FULL DATA, VERMONT SPENT OVER $1.9 BILLION ON FOSSIL FUELS, WITH OVER $1.4 BILLION DRAINING OUT OF OUR STATE ECONOMY.”

That economic model is simpy not sustainable. Also, we know we have to stop burning fossil fuels. Period.
So, we need a new model, to replace fossil fuel as an energy source. That requires new ways of getting around and heating our homes and businesses.
Although I love the idea of new kinds of mobility and even some old kinds, like this Messerschmitt built in the early 1900s, but we really need to consider the most sustainable way of incorporating mass transit.
Buses and trains for the longer distances and “last mile” vehicles to get us from the train or bus station to where we want to go.
No easy task, but don’t really have a choice.
